Leveraging people

When people are leverage

When is hiring help worth it?

3 minute read

A person becomes leverage when they buy back time you can use for something worth more, or when they know something that changes your outcome, not just your workload.

The math is simple in both directions. Either the hour they save you earns more than they cost, or the mistake they prevent is bigger than their fee. If neither is true, it is just spending.

The highest-return version is usually specialist knowledge at a decision point: the right lender before an application, a CPA before a tax year, an attorney before you sign.

Example

A mortgage broker who knows a bank-statement program costs you nothing extra and may be the difference between a denial and an approval. A bookkeeper at $300 a month can be the reason your income is documentable at all.

Why this matters

People underspend on advice at the moments it is worth the most, and overspend on it afterward.

What to do with this

  • Identify the next real decision point, and get the right specialist BEFORE it, not after.
  • Ask a prospective advisor what they will not help with — precision about scope is a good sign.
