Building the small team most people need
Who should I actually have around me?
2 minute read
For most households and small businesses the useful team is short: someone for taxes, someone for lending, someone for legal when it comes up, and someone who can keep the books straight.
They need to be able to talk to each other. A tax strategy that makes you unlendable is a failure of coordination, not of either professional.
Partners are a different category. A partner is leverage when they bring something you genuinely lack — capital, skill, deal flow — and a liability when they mostly bring agreement.
Why this matters
The team is what turns one good decision into a repeatable process.
What to do with this
- Write the four roles down and name who fills each one, or write “none” — the gaps are the point.
- Tell your tax person what you plan to borrow, and your lender how you file. In that order.
