Timing: when to open, when to sit still
I need three accounts — should I space them out?
2 minute read
Any change to your tradelines — adding one or removing one — can knock the file around in the short term, even when the change is a good one.
So if you need three active tradelines to build a file, open them together rather than one every few months. Then stop. Make no further account changes for at least six months so the file can settle and age.
Spacing changes out means you are permanently in the short-term dip instead of past it.
Why this matters
People restart the clock over and over without realizing that the restarting is the problem.
What to do with this
- Decide the full set of accounts you need, open them in one stretch, then leave it alone for six months.
- If a loan application is coming, freeze all account changes well before you apply.
