Building from scratch

I have no credit history. Where do I start?

3 minute read

No history is not the same as bad history. You are not digging out; you are starting a file. That is faster.

The usual starting points are a secured card, a credit-builder product, or being added as an authorized user on someone else's well-managed account. Each one creates reported activity in your name.

Once accounts exist, the file grows on its own: on-time payments, low reported balances, and time. Small balances paid in full still build history — you do not need to carry debt to build credit.

Why this matters

The myth that you must carry a balance to build credit costs people interest for no benefit.

What to do with this

  • Open the accounts you need in one stretch, then leave the file alone for six months.
  • Charge something small and recurring, and pay it before the statement closes.
