Stability — the quiet qualifier
Does changing jobs hurt my application?
2 minute read
Stability is a judgment about predictability: how long in the job or business, whether the pay structure changed, whether the income type changed, and whether the address history looks settled.
Moving to a better-paying job in the same field usually reads fine. Moving from W-2 to self-employed is the change that most often resets the clock, because the documentation basis changes entirely.
Timing is the tool here. The same career move made before or after an application produces completely different outcomes.
Why this matters
A move that is great for your life can be badly timed for your loan, and the fix is usually just sequence.
What to do with this
- If a big loan and a job change are both coming, ask a lender which order works before you commit to either.
