Investments are not interchangeable

What's the best thing to invest in?

3 minute read

There is no ranked list. Two investments with the same headline return can be completely different decisions depending on structure, liquidity, effort and who is running it.

Evaluate the actual thing in front of you across: the asset itself, the market it sits in, the structure of the deal, the person or team behind it, the risk, the upside, how liquid it is, what options it leaves you, and your time horizon.

A great asset in a bad structure, or with the wrong person operating it, is a bad investment. That combination is what most losses actually look like.

Why this matters

“What's the best investment?” has no answer, and chasing one is how people end up in things they cannot exit.

What to do with this

  • Score any opportunity across those nine dimensions before you look at the projected return.
  • If you cannot describe the structure and the exit in a sentence each, you are not ready to invest in it.
