Getting ahead

Pick your path: time, risk and how hands-on you want to be

I make decent money but never get ahead. Where do I even start?

3 minute read

Three questions shape every choice. How long until you need the money? How much of a drop can you live through without panicking? How much time do you want to put in?

Short timeframe (under 3 years): keep it safe. Savings and cash cushions. Money you need soon should not ride the stock market.

Medium timeframe (3 to 10 years): a mix. Index funds, protected products, or one rental if you have cushion.

Long timeframe (10+ years): you can take more ups and downs, because time smooths them out.

Hands-on people can flip houses, be a landlord or build. Hands-off people can use index funds, protected products or lend through notes with people they know.

Why this matters

The right investment for someone else can be the wrong one for you. Your timeframe, risk comfort and time decide it.
